Address, Mr. Harrison Chaney, Fitzgerald Ga.

Rev. A. S. Minchew, Davis, Ga.

The following account of the cause of Amanda's hospitalization came from Rachel Chaney, granddaughter of Amanda (Rachel Caves e-mail, 28 Feb 1999):

"Amanda apparently couldn't take the $5.00 left in Lemuel's will to the first set of children, she had a nervous collapse and ended up in Milledgeville Insane Asylum for 8 months in 1896. The story goes --- the night before she left for the asylum she spent at her son's house (GFE Chaney) for his wife Rhoda to make her a dress to wear the next day to the asylum. My grandmother said all Amanda could talk about to Rhoda was when she got her inheritance from Lemuel she was going to give Rhoda and GFE some of it. Naturally, that inheritance settlement was already over except in her mind. Amanda came back restored."15
